Alameda Snapshot: Empty Again
It appears that the New Zealander has closed leaving the historic Croll's building empty again. Here is an Alameda Snapshot of the beautiful stain glass incorporated in the building.

Alameda Snapshot: Towata Flowers
With the Holiday Season approaching, I thought a photo from season's past of the window at Towata Flowers would make a good Alameda Snapshot for today. The business has been a staple on Santa Clara and is now closing.

Alameda Snapshot: JFK in Alameda
Today's Alameda Snapshot comes from an Encinal Classmate Noreen Roth Sherratt. She was going through family slides and found one of President John F. Kennedy on the runway of NAS Alameda.
Amazing what you can find when you clean out the attic, closet or garage. If you have an amazing Alameda photo please send it along and I will include it in the Friday segment.

Alameda Snapshot: High Winds Strike Jackson Park
This week's high winds brought more down than cables on the Bay Bridge. On my nightly walk through Jackson Park I saw one of the large trees had fallen from the wind. Have a great weekend.

Alameda Snapshot: Antiques By the Bay
Summer is now over and fall has arrived with crisp weather. It is also the first weekend of the month and this means it is times for the Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire. This is Northern California's largest antiques and collectibles show with over 800 outdoor dealers selling their merchandise on the first Sunday of every month. The Faire is at Alameda Point Naval Air Station in Alameda, California. Everything sold at the show must be at least twenty years old and there are no reproductions allowed.

Alameda Snapshot: Alameda vs. Encinal 1978
Today's Alameda snapshot is of "The Big Game", a.ka. The Island Bowl, in 1978. A local sports writer renamed the game in the 90s. The 54th annual renewal of this crosstown rivalry is renewed tonight at Encinal's Willie Stargell field at 7 PM.

Alameda Snapshot: Webster Street Ad
Today's snapshot is from jayadewa of Fickr. The is a fantastic painted ad that is just off Webster street. It was restored a few years ago and is a true artistic piece on the street. I never have had a Golden Bridge Beverage, but the ad makes it look fun.
Have a great weekend.

Alameda Snapshot(s): USS Hornet in Apollo Recovery Mission
Today's Alameda Snapshots come courtesy of NASA. They are of the USS Hornet working both the Apollo 11 and 12 Missions. The floating museum will have several activities to celebrate man's walk on the moon this weekend. See USS Hornet website for details. http://www.uss-hornet.org/
Video of the capsule being placed on the flight deck.

The Apollo 11 mission, the first manned lunar mission, launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida via the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) developed Saturn V launch vehicle on July 16, 1969 and safely returned to Earth on July 24, 1969.
The recovery operation took place in the Pacific Ocean where Navy para-rescue men recovered the capsule housing the 3-man Apollo 11 crew. The crew was airlifted to safety aboard the U.S.S. Hornet recovery ship, where they were quartered in a Mobile Quarantine Facility (MQF) which served as their home for 21 days. In this photo taken at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the quarantined housing facility is being lowered from the U.S.S. Hornet, onto a trailer for transport to Hickam Field. From there, it was loaded aboard an Air Force C-141 jet and flown back to Ellington Air Force Base Texas, and then on to the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC) Lunar Receiving Laboratory in Houston, Texas. Date of Image: 1969-07-27
By November the Hornet was out picking up Apollo 12.
